Slane has a medieval bridge and an 18th century
road carrying 21st century articulated traffic…
The only long-term solution to the
ongoing traffic problem in Slane
is the construction of the bypass.

Slane Community representatives meet with World Heritage expert

23 January 2011

The Bypass Slane Campaign on invitation from Meath County Council, contacted Dr Douglas Comer, an independent World Heritage expert engaged by Meath County Council. The group, along with other community representatives including the Slane Community Forum and the Slane Bridge Action Group, met with Dr Comer and had a very useful discussion of the issues surrounding the particular problems facing Slane as well as issues surrounding the Brú na Bóinne World Heritage Site.

Dr Comer listened to the perspectives of the Slane group and took many points on board. He was made aware of the sad history of the handling of the road safety situation in the village as well as the significant detrimental impact on trade in the village of the siting of the Visitor's Centre south of the river. The issue of planning withinn the World Heritage Site was also discussed. The clear message that the Slane Community gave at the meeting is that there must be an accommodation reached between the needs of the Slane community and the integrity of the World Heritage Site.

While on his visit to Ireland, Dr Comer consulted widely and has had discussions with many institutions and individuals who have adopted a position on the situation. Following his visit to Ireland, he was due to travel to Paris to consult UNESCO documentation relating to the Brú na Bóinne WHS and canvass opinion on the matter there.

Dr Comer is compiling a report for Meath County Council is due to give evidence during the Bord Pleanála Oral Hearing in February.
