Slane has a medieval bridge and an 18th century
road carrying 21st century articulated traffic…
The only long-term solution to the
ongoing traffic problem in Slane
is the construction of the bypass.

Correspondence received from NRA in response to BSC letter to Minister for Transport

May 2011

The Bypass Slane Campaign wrote to the new Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, to remind him of the current situation in relation to the plans for the proposed Slane Bypass. We impressed upon the Minister the urgency of the road safety situation in Slane and the relatively small cost of the bypass relative to the other road schemes carried out around the country over the last decade or so. We expressed the belief that, even in these difficult economic times, expenditure on a bypass for Slane would be money well spent with both immediate and longer term benefits.

The Minister forwarded our letter to the National Roads Authority who responded. They said that although funding to the NRA had been substantially reduced a small number of major national road improvement schemes will commence in the next few years. Available funding will also be directed towards the provision of safety measures and other works. Additionally, the NRA has allocated over €2m to Meath County Council to progress work on the scheme, in particular in relation to the tendering for construction.

They also said that the government will be undertaking a review of Capital Expenditure programmes and this will have a knock-on effect on the NRA prioritising various road schemes.

Thus, while there is no firm commitment to construct the bypass should it get planning, it appears that the scheme should most fefinitely qualify for whatever funding may be available.
